The CranioSacral Rhythm…

Your Body is Speaking To You – Want to know what it’s saying?

Clients during their first session typically ask me, “What are you doing?”, as I gently lay my hands on their hips, their shoulders, their head, and even their feet.

“I’m checking in with your CranioSacral Rhythm”, I respond.

“Uh hunh…what in the heck is a Cranio ‘whatever you just said’?”

And that seems to be the $64,000 dollar question…..

Inside your head, between your skull bones and your brain are layers of membranes.  These membranes extend down through the bottom of your skull and surround your spinal vertebrae all the way down to your tailbone.

Inside these membranes is a fluid that flows from your head down to your tailbone and back. Known as the CranioSacral Fluid, it’s made up of blood and lymph components.  The flow of this fluid is very rhythmical, normally taking about 6-12 seconds to make one whole loop all the way down and back.

As the fluid flows down to your tailbone, your body rolls out slightly.  And as the fluid flows back to your head, your body then rolls inward slightly.  This motion of your body rolling in and out is palpable (noticeable) all over – from the top of your head all the way down to your tippy-toes.

And what does all this mean…?

When I lay my hands on a client’s body, I monitor the flow and quality of movement at different parts of the body.  I’m feeling to see where the body is rolling in and out well, and where the body’s not rolling so well.  Where the body is “rolling” well, all is well; where the body isn’t “rolling” well are where there are restrictions – either in the tissues (muscles, tendons, fascia, etc.), or in the membranes.

The CranioSacral Rhythm is an indicator to the trained hand as to the relative health of the tissues, the organs, and most things in the body.

Without getting too technical, CranioSacral Therapy can effectively release a wide variety of tensions and restrictions – from muscle spasms to nerve impingement — with the CranioSacral Rhythm as a guide to lead directly to the cause of what’s ailing you.

So, to coin a phrase – “that’s how we roll.”   =)

The History Of CranioSacral Therapy…

CranioSacral Therapy was first developed in the early 1900′s by Dr. William Sutherland, and then extensively studied, tested, and documented since the 1970′s by Dr. John Upledger.

Dr. Sutherland believed the bones of the head move, contrary to the beliefs of the medical establishment of that time.  From this theory, he went on to develop a system of gently adjusting the skull bones to improve health throughout the early 1900′s.

During the 1970′s, Dr. Upledger was a professor at the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University. He led a team of anatomists, physiologists, biophysicists, and bioengineers who performed and published the clinical research that formed the basis for CranioSacral Therapy.
In 1985, Dr. Upledger founded The Upledger Institute in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.  Today, the Institute is one of the most respected training venues in the world.  Dr. Upledger also founded the Upledger Clinic to provide treatment and to continue his research in a clinical setting.  The Upledger Institute has gained worldwide recognition for its clinical research and therapeutic services.

CranioSacral Therapy has been used successfully to relieve numerous health problems, including migraines, neck and back pain, TMJ issues, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, ADD, central nervous system disorders and many others. And because it’s so gentle, CranioSacral Therapy has been proven effective for all ages, from infants to the elderly.
